Find resources / Group parenting programme / The importance of play / What my pēpi likes to do best

Exploring activities the group's tamariki like doing and why.

Learning goals

  • Learn about taking cues from children.
  • Understand that play is how children learn.

Discuss what the babies like doing

Ask the participants, "What does your baby like to do best of all?"

Depending on the size of the group, share in pairs or take turns sharing in a small group.

Encourage them to talk in more detail about what their baby enjoys best about it:

  • How did it start?
  • What’s your part in the activity?
  • How can you help?
  • What might you do next?
  • What is your baby learning by doing this?

Ask whānau to look at the ‘Pēpi says’ sections in the Tākai Whakatipu booklet relevant to their child’s age.

Ask them, "Can you see your pēpi in what’s being said here?"

Discuss with the group.
