Learning goals

  • Build the confidence and ability to parent positively.
  • Use a fair and firm approach to parenting.
  • Understand the difference between discipline and punishment.

Discuss parenting

Work through the Tākai booklet The World of Under-fives. Read it together or work in pairs. Discuss the ideas on these pages.

  • Look at page 6 ‘Ten basics for a fair and firm approach’. Ask the group to work through each idea and contribute their own ideas.
  • Continue onto page 8 ‘Ages and stages’ and do the same.

Practise saying what you want them to do

As a group, look at 'Whānau say’ on page 9, ‘Try to say what you do want them to do…’

Practise in pairs, or in the group, and work out how to say the following statements in a positive way.

  • Don’t stand on the couch.
  • No, you can’t have a biscuit.
  • Stop whinging.
  • Leave that alone.
  • Don’t pull the cat’s tail.
  • Stop yelling.

Work through the age and stage pages that are most relevant to the participants’ children’s ages. Stop and discuss the points that are interesting to them. Use open questions to get the discussions going.
