Tākai About Tākai
Tākai is a village of whānau supporters who work together to wrap around whānau, communities and our littlest tamariki under-five. Together we focus on building protective factors for tamariki and whānau to thrive.
Through rauemi , hononga , ako and pūtea for community initiatives, we work towards our shared vision of kia matua rautia – a thriving village raising children together.
It takes a village to raise a child.
The age-old saying is just as true today. That's why we’re committed to supporting you, the awesome people who support whānau every day, to do things in your own way.
Whether you’re a whānau worker preparing for a home visit, a supporter of a parent, the local rugby coach with a great idea for a community project, or someone who just wants the best for our tamariki, let’s kōrero about working together.
Tākai is supported by a small team of community development kaimahi based at Oranga Tamariki, alongside our national partners.
A one-stop hub for whānau supporters
This website is loaded with tonnes of research-based child development information and resources to help you with your mahi. It contains information from pregnancy through to 5 years, weaving in the best parenting resources from our trusted partners.
It’s full of ideas for sharing the information with whānau and simple activities that build attachment and healthy brains. If you’re looking for a more personal connection, talk with us about other ways we can play, learn and grow together.

It takes a village to raise a child. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, aunt, cuzzie, koro, nan, the local bus driver or the fish and chip shop owner – together we can help tamariki and whānau thrive.
Tākai is a kaupapa that wraps around the awesome people who provide awhi for whānau of our littlest tamariki under-five.
Through rauemi, hononga, ako and pūtea to bring ideas to life – Tākai taps into the energy of the village, weaving threads of traditional storytelling with parenting in the modern world.
And to make sure we’re meeting the needs of whānau and the village who support them, we’re working with communities across the motu to create new resources and opportunities to play, learn and grow together.
Kia matua rautia.
Standing on the shoulders of many – we are a thriving village raising children together.
We are Tākai.

Standing on the shoulders of many
Tākai officially launched on Children’s Day – 6 March 2022. Previously called SKIP, Tākai is the end result of a big haerenga involving hundreds of whānau supporters from all over the motu.
Becoming Tākai is an exciting step forward for us, weaving together the whakaaro and wisdom from everyone who has been part of the SKIP story since it began in 2004.
