Understanding baby's journey through the stages of motor development.

Learning goal

  • Understand the development of motor skills in children.

Discuss motor development

From birth to 3 years old, a baby goes from totally relying on their whānau to meet all their needs, to being a little independent person wanting to do many things for and by themselves. They’ve become an active moving, climbing, running jumping and agile child.

So what are all the stages in between?

Depending on the comfort level of the group, you might like to try to get them to act as babies at different stages of motor development.

Ask the group to examine the motor development cards and read, think and talk about them.

Then together put them into sequential order.

Invite the group to use the resources available to check their thinking. Use the resources below to support sequencing.
